Dean Hern to step down

University of Louisville School of Nursing Dean Marcia J. Hern will step down after 10 years in the position.

Hern, Ed.D., C.N.S., R.N., will serve as dean at least through early fall 2017. She announced her decision to faculty and staff on Friday, Feb. 10.

“We are becoming a true community of scholars,” Hern said. “Our students are some of the best and brightest, and they remain our reason for being. We have accomplished so very much during the past 10 years, and I am looking forward to a new chapter of my personal and professional life.”

Nursing assistant professor honored for compassionate care

School of Nursing Assistant Professor Diane Riff was honored at a luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017, for her dedication to providing compassionate care.

Riff and six others were recognized at “A Commitment to Compassion” at the Muhammad Ali Center, sponsored by Passport Health Plan, Compassionate Louisville and Insider Louisville.

Owensboro BSN grad receives Stogsdill award

Hannah Tipton, a December 2016 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Nursing Owensboro Extension Program, stood out as a leader among her cohort.

Tipton, 23, is the first to receive the Vicki M. Stogsdill Award, which was established by the Owensboro Health Foundation to provide $5,000 every semester to a graduating UofL nursing student who has shown dedication to learning and excellence in practice and leadership. The UofL program offers the only traditional bachelor of science in nursing degree in the Owensboro region.

Racetrack clinic named finalist for Health Care Heroes award

The Kentucky Racing Health Services Center has been chosen as a finalist for Louisville Business First's Health Care Heroes awards. The clinic, which is run by the University of Louisville School of Nursing, was nominated in the community outreach category.
 

The nonprofit clinic serves the backside workers of Kentucky's thoroughbred racing industry. Most of the clinic's patients are low-income, migrant workers from Latin America. 

Graduating nursing student inspired to serve disadvantaged groups

Karina Strange has returned to her native Louisville to serve disadvantaged populations facing health care disparities.

Strange will graduate with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville School of Nursing during winter commencement Thursday, Dec. 15, at the KFC Yum! Center where she will serve as the student speaker.

In addition to the honor of serving as the student speaker, she was chosen as the Fall 2016 President’s Outstanding Graduate from the School of Nursing, bringing an unorthodox perspective to the program.

Nursing associate professor presents research on safety culture at long-term care facilities

School of Nursing Associate Professor Said Abusalem, Ph.D., R.N., presented on his long-term care research at the Health Watch USA Patient Safety Conference last month in Lexington. His presentation titled "In an Era of Reform: The Culture of Safety in Long Term Care Facilities" is available on YouTube.

Nursing professor edits journal series on reducing maternal morbidity, mortality

The critical and often unsung work of registered nurses was celebrated at the third-annual University of Louisville School of Nursing Florence Nightingale Awards on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016.

Six people from myriad facets within nursing were honored for impacting the lives of patients, improving health outcomes, elevating the profession and inspiring others to pursue nursing as a career.
