In time for Derby, the May issue of O, The Oprah Magazine features a story on faculty members Whitney Nash and Sara Robertson and their work at the nationally-recognized Kentucky Racing Health Services Center in providing high-quality care to backside racetrack workers.

The nurse practitioner-run clinic has provided 18,000 patient visits to low-income thoroughbred racing industry workers and their families since opening its doors in 2005.

Online intervention improves depression treatment rates in teen moms

An online program persuaded teenage mothers across 10 Kentucky counties to seek medical help for depression, highlighting an inexpensive way to increase mental health treatment rates for the vulnerable group, according to a University of Louisville study.

The website included videos of adolescent mothers describing their experiences with postpartum depression and treatment, questions and answers, and local and national resources, including referrals for counseling services and suicide and child-abuse prevention hotlines.

Nursing faculty, students win awards at Research!Louisville

As part of Research!Louisville earlier this month, School of Nursing Professor Marianne Hutti, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., received the Louisville Women in Medicine and Science award for the poster, “The Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale: A Clinical Screening Instrument for Identifying and Predicting Intense Grief and Need for Follow-Up after Perinatal Loss.” Members of her research team included Lynne Hall, Barbara Polivka, John Myers, Susan White, Janice Hill, Elizabeth Kloenne, Jaclyn Hayden, and Meredith Grisanti.

Faculty, students receive awards at Midwest Nursing Research Society conference

Several School of Nursing faculty and students were honored at the annual Midwest Nursing Research Society conference April 6-9, 2017 in Minneapolis.

MEPN students Jaclyn Hayden and Meredith Grisanti received third place in the Master’s Student Poster Competition for their research, Predicting Grief Intensity after Perinatal Loss. Their mentor is Professor Marianne Hutti, Ph.D., W.H.N.P.-B.C.

UofL Owensboro nursing program has perfect first-time pass rate on RN licensure exam

The University of Louisville School of Nursing Owensboro Extension program achieved a 100 percent pass rate in 2016 for first-time takers of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, NCLEX-RN. The UofL traditional undergraduate nursing program in Louisville achieved a 93 percent pass rate.

State boards of nursing administer the standardized exam to determine whether a prelicensure nursing school graduate is prepared for entry-level practice as a registered nurse. The pass rate includes all graduates who took the NCLEX for the first time in 2016.

UofL nursing students give back during spring break

Instead of a beach getaway, a handful of nursing students spent their spring break giving back to the Louisville community and those in need.

On March 14, seven undergraduate students helped administer vaccines to more than 100 adults and children at Kentucky Refugee Ministries, a nonprofit organization that provides resettlement services to refugees.

Students administered vaccines to prevent chickenpox, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus to refugees from Iraq, Nepal, Somalia and Syria.

UofL health science schools rise in 2018 U.S. News rankings

The University of Louisville School of Nursing and School of Medicine both jumped in U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2018. 

The School of Nursing’s “Best Nursing Schools-Master’s” ranking saw a significant increase — 12 points — rising to 76th this year from 88th in 2017. The school ranked 68th in 2016.

UofL swimmer, nursing student receives ACC scholarship

UofL swimmer and nursing student Andrea Cottrell has been recognized for excellence in the pool and in the classroom.

Cottrell and fellow UofL swimmer Grigory Tarasevich are among 54 student athletes to receive the 2017 Weaver-James-Corrigan Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference, which provides recipients $5,000 scholarships. The ACC awards the scholarship to student athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and their respective sport while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
