Healthier Futures for All

The School of Nursing is dedicated to supporting the University of Louisville's priority on community engagement and community partnership as fundamental elements of a distinguished metropolitan university. As a Carnegie Foundation-designated institution for community engagement, we actively integrate a focus on community partnership into our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Additionally, the School of Nursing aligns with the Future of Nursing: Leading Change initiative by emphasizing community partnerships, empowerment, and health equity. These commitments enhance our educational framework and play a vital role in advancing health outcomes within our communities.

Community engagement and the drive for health equity are fundamentally intertwined, especially for populations facing significant health disparities. The School of Nursing believes that the true potential of practice, research, teaching, and service is significantly enhanced through collaboration. This approach is especially vital in addressing the needs of communities that face health status and outcomes disadvantages.

By working together, we can make meaningful strides toward improving health and paving the way for a brighter, healthier future for all.

About the Office of Community Engagement

The Office of Community Engagement was established in Fall 2010 to support the faculty, staff, and students of the UofL School of Nursing to:

  1. Facilitate partnerships: Building strong collaborations with community organizations to enhance nursing practice and research.
  2. Enhancing educational experiences and promoting service learning: Integrating community engagement into the curriculum to enrich learning and foster real-world application of nursing skills and providing opportunities for students to engage in service-learning projects where they collaborate with populations that experience health and healthcare disparities
  3. Advocate for health equity: Working to promote health equity through outreach and advocacy efforts in the community.
  4. Support research initiatives: Assisting faculty and students in conducting community-based research that addresses local health disparities.

By focusing on these areas, the Office of Community Engagement plays a vital role in advancing the mission of the School of Nursing and improving health outcomes in the community.

In addition to the stated purpose, the Community Engagement efforts focus on the following through the collaboration of the SON Community Engagement Committee.

  • Evaluate the SON community engagement plan annually.
  • Strategically plan the SON's participation in community events held by the University's community partners.
  • Oversee communication to faculty regarding community engagement opportunities.
