Congratulations to Dr. Said Abusalem who has accepted the position of Director of the Master’s Entry into Professional Nursing Program. The MEPN program is an innovative accelerated nursing program wherein six semesters the student earns a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in nursing. Abusalem has been teaching in the MEPN Clinical Nurse Leader CNL Program since its inception in 2015.

School of Nursing faculty help administer first group of COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible Kentuckians

Kentucky joins states across the United States administering its first COVID-19 vaccinations. The vaccination is being offered to health care workers and medical first responders. A mass vaccination site opened on Jan. 4 at Broadbent Arena in Louisville.

At least 15 School of Nursing faculty members are helping provide the manpower for this vaccination initiative and using it as an educational opportunity for students, who will begin volunteering on Jan. 18. Nursing students will help with check in as well as administer vaccinations under faculty supervision.

School of Nursing student headed to Tanzania after graduation

The coronavirus pandemic has presented obstacles for seniors, but it didn’t stop student Cierra Battle from planning for life after graduation.

With the help of the Kentucky Institute for International Studies Tanzania director, Cierra Battle, who graduates in December, has accepted an elective program at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania. She will spend her time in the maternity ward, pediatrics and emergency medicine departments for six months.

Throughout the city and state, many are voting early and others will vote on Election Day, Nov. 3. Not only is 2020’s election happening in the midst of a pandemic, but it also is historical as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote.

Paula Johnson, a doctorate of nursing practice student, says it is important to pause and commemorate the milestone and think about the advancement of women. 

Tiffany Mills named Student Nurse of the Year by KNA

School of Nursing senior Tiffany Mills has been named Student Nurse of the Year by the Kentucky Nurses Association. This award Is meant to honor a nursing student who has made a significant contribution in Kentucky or to KNA. Mills is the president of the University of Louisville chapter of the Kentucky Association of Nursing Students. She is a member of National Student Nurses’ Association, Black Student Nurses Association, KYANNA, Black Student Union, Kentucky Nurses Association and serves as the academic liaison for the Student Government Association nursing student council.

Paul Clark – UofL Top 4:

Congratulations to Dr. Paul Clark, PhD, RN, MA for being named a Top 4 Faculty Favorite of 2019-2020. This year, students submitted 1,040 nominations for 444 faculty members. And of those 444 faculty, Clark ranked in the top 4.

Dr. Sarah Schirmer appointed by Gov. Andy Beshear as member of Eating Disorder Council

School of Nursing assistant professor Dr. Sarah Schirmer, DNP will spend the next two years as a member of the Eating Disorder Council. Schirmer received this honor after being nominated by the Kentucky Association of Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives.

Schirmer has over 15 years of experience in mental health care, including her work at the Louisville Center for Eating Disorder since its inception in 2017.
