Empowering middle and high school students to explore healthcare careers
The Healthcare Heroes program at the UofL School of Nursing is dedicated to exposing middle and high school students to the world of healthcare careers. This initiative aims to enhance the variety of the healthcare workforce by increasing the representation of individuals from Louisville communities by partnering with schools and the Neighborhood House Community Center.
Led by Dr. Brittney Corniel, the program's Lead Facilitator, Healthcare Heroes offers a comprehensive and engaging experience for students. Each month, guest speakers from various health professions share their insights and experiences, providing students with valuable knowledge and inspiration.
Once a year, students have the opportunity to tour the UofL campus, where they engage in hands-on medical procedures in the Nursing Skills Lab and Simulation Center. Here, they learn essential skills such as applying bandages, describing wounds, and even participating in an exciting escape room experience designed to simulate real-world medical scenarios.
Additionally, students take part in a relay race using geriatric simulators, such as knee braces to reduce mobility and glasses that impair visibility. These activities help students understand the challenges patients face in performing everyday tasks, fostering empathy and a deeper appreciation for patient care.
