A student affinity group is a small, informal community formed by students who share a common identity, interest, or characteristic. These groups can focus on various aspects such as race, gender, culture, or shared hobbies, providing a space for members to connect, support each other, and advocate for their interests.

  • Populations
  • Identity, culture, or language
  • Academic interests
  • Policy issues
  • Professional communication

Affinity Group Rules

  • Affinity groups may be formed for up to one academic year (August–May)
  • Groups may re-form in subsequent years if there is renewed interest
  • Deadline for the formation of a new Affinity Group for each year is no later than December 31 of each academic year
  • A summary of student group activities must be submitted electronically to Dr. Cynethia Bethel-Hines in May to be considered for future designation as an Affinity Group
  • For current Affinity groups who want to re-form in subsequent years, submit an interest in reforming in the electronic summary
  • Designated faculty advisors commit to one academic year only
  • Faculty advisor consent must be sought each subsequent year
  • Groups that are also Recognized Student Organizations (for example – Black Student Nurses organization) may also request Affinity status. They must abide by UofL RSO and Affinity Group rules.

How do you start an Affinity Group?

Be enrolled in a nursing program

You must be an undergraduate or graduate student actively enrolled in Nursing.

Pick a focus

Identify a focus for the group and receive approval from an interested nursing faculty member

Pick a faculty member

Identify a designated faculty advisor who has agreed to work with the identified group

Formalize the group

Identify the following: Group name, membership, and group goals

Designate student leadership

Choose students who will be responsible for leading the affinity group

Submit all needed information, including your faculty advisor's consent via the form below.
