UofL School of Nursing Welcomes Record-Breaking BSN Applicants for 2025

Expanded capacity across all undergraduate pathways positions UofL to meet Kentucky’s urgent nursing workforce needs

The University of Louisville School of Nursing is experiencing unprecedented growth in its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs, with the 2025 academic year marking the most applications in the School’s history. This fall, the School will enroll 120 students in the Upper Division of the pre-licensure BSN program—up from the previous cap of 100 per semester. This growth reflects a strategic response to the region’s critical nursing shortage and the School’s commitment to preparing more Cardinal Nurses for the front lines of healthcare.

Enrollment growth is evident across all BSN pathways. As of Spring 2025, UofL Nursing enrolled 1,250 undergraduate students: 575 in the Upper Division, 447 in the Lower Division, 76 in the Accelerated Second-Degree BSN, and 120 in the RN-BSN program, with 32 more in concurrent enrollment programs. Compared to Fall 2021, this represents a 22% increase in BSN enrollment. Despite this growth, the School has maintained its high academic standards, with NCLEX pass rates above the national average and a graduation rate exceeding 95%.

This surge in enrollment is more than a milestone; it reflects the School’s mission in action. With Kentucky facing a shortage of nurses, the School’s increased enrollment directly supports the region’s healthcare infrastructure. By increasing access to nursing education and investing in both student and faculty success, the University of Louisville is helping to close the workforce gap. These efforts also advance health equity and improve access to care. The School’s leadership in nursing education ensures that more students can answer the call to serve, and that communities across Kentucky receive the high-quality care they deserve.
