A .357 Average and a 4.0 Mindset with ABSN Student, Easton Lotus
April 29, 2026
When pursuing a degree, school becomes the focus. Between classes, assignments and preparing for exams, its difficult not to let your whole world orbit around education. For undergraduate nursing student, Easton Lotus (also known as E), she orbits around, not just her nursing studies, but also her college softball career.
We caught up with Lotus to ask her about her experiences in the nursing program and as a UofL student-athlete.
And in case you aren't a baseball fan, yes, a .357 batting average is excellent, especially when you consider being the lead-off hitter for 51 games, 15-game hitting streak, 18 stolen bases, and .948 fielding average*.
UofL What degree/program are you in at UofL School of Nursing and why did you choose to pursue it?
E.L., I am currently in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program at the University of Louisville and am projected to graduate in August 2026.
I chose a career in nursing because of my deep compassion, and wanting to help others. More than that, I’m drawn to being there for people during some of their most vulnerable moments. I like that nursing isn’t just about treating a condition, it’s about caring for the whole person, advocating for them, and building a sense of trust. It also gives me a chance to make a true difference in someone's life, and that is something I always strive to do.
I chose the ABSN because the program offers flexibility while also allowing me to begin my nursing career sooner.
UofL What has been the most surprising thing so far about your education journey?
E.L. So far, its how supportive the program has been in helping me balance nursing school and playing college softball. It's been so refreshing to see how willing the faculty are to work with me so I can succeed in both school and softball. I’m grateful for that.
UofL If you could describe your experience at the School of Nursing in three words, what would they be and why?
E.L. Supportive, challenging, and rewarding. The faculty and staff create an environment where students can grow and succeed. The program pushes me to grow and learn every day, and overall, it feels really fulfilling to be part of this community.
UofL Who has been your biggest influence or mentor at the University of Louisville, and how have they impacted you?
E.L. My biggest influence at UofL has been Dr. Sarah Moreno, who has been my clinical instructor for the past two semesters. She has been incredibly helpful, patient, supportive, and always takes the time to check in on us and offer guidance based on her experience. She pushes us out of our comfort zone, which has helped me grow and gain confidence as a student nurse. Her flexibility and encouragement have made such a big difference in my growth, and I truly look up to her so much.
UofL Has anything you’ve learned in nursing made a connection to your experience as a softball player?
E.L. Being a softball player and being part of a team has actually shaped how I approach a lot of things in nursing. One of the biggest connections is teamwork—just like on the field, in nursing, you rely on communication, trust, and everyone doing their role to get the best outcome. Softball has also taught me how to stay calm in high-pressure situations and make quick decisions under pressure, which is crucial in nursing, especially in clinical settings. That overall sense of being part of something bigger than myself, both in softball and nursing, is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things to me.
UofL What advice would you give to prospective students who are interested in pursuing a degree in nursing?
E.L. My advice would be to never doubt yourself and remember that you are capable of more than you think. Nursing school is challenging, but with hard work, support from your instructors and classmates, and a willingness to ask for help, it can be incredibly rewarding. Building relationships along the way makes all the difference.
UofL Outside of your nursing studies, what are some of your hobbies or interests?
E.L. As I mentioned, I play softball for UofL, which keeps me busy and gives me a positive outlet from school. I also love spending time with my friends and teammates—they’re amazing, and being with them helps me stay connected and supported. I’m a big sister to four siblings, which is one of the most rewarding parts of my life and has taught me a lot about responsibility and patience. I also enjoy shopping with my roommate as a way to unwind and treat myself occasionally.
