Meet Lauren Kelly: The person behind our space
July 10, 2026
The spaces we learn and work in shape more than we often realize. They influence how we feel, how we connect, and how we show up each day.
At the UofL School of Nursing, creating that kind of thoughtful environment doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of intentional work. And much of that work is led by Lauren Kelly.
Since 1974, our building has transformed from its origins as a hospital into a space designed to support education, collaboration, and community. Lauren has played a key role in continuing that transformation, overseeing renovations and enhancements while also managing the day-to-day details that keep everything running behind the scenes.
In this Q&A, she talks about what inspires her and how she approaches building a workplace where people feel supported, connected, and proud to be part of it.
UofL: What is your role at the UofL School of Nursing?
L.K.: I serve as the Senior Manager of Operations. In this role, I wear a lot of hats and thrive on the variety of work it brings. My responsibilities span facility operations, renovations, and space management, along with supporting employee well-being and workplace culture, all aimed at creating an environment where our faculty, staff, and students can do their best work.
UofL: If you could describe your experience working at the School of Nursing in three words, what would they be and why?
L.K.: Supportive, Empowering, and Innovative.
From the moment I walked through the doors of the School of Nursing, I felt welcomed and supported by an incredible group of colleagues. The culture here empowers employees to share ideas, take initiative, and make a meaningful impact. I’ve especially appreciated the opportunity and support to launch initiatives that strengthen workplace well-being and encourage a positive, engaging environment for our faculty and staff.
UofL: Part of your job includes interior decorating a newly renovated space. Where do you get your inspiration?
L.K.: I find inspiration by exploring spaces across UofL's campuses and seeing how different environments are designed and used. Whether it's an academic building, student gathering space, or residence hall, I'm always looking for ideas that balance function, comfort, and design. I also draw inspiration from the UofL brand, incorporating elements that reflect our Cardinal pride while creating spaces that feel welcoming, purposeful, and connected to the university's identity.
UofL: What is one aspect of your role that impacts the UofL community the most and why?
L.K.: I believe the greatest impact I have is helping shape the employee and student experience. From creating welcoming spaces to supporting well-being and workplace culture initiatives, I focus on building an environment where people feel connected, supported, and proud to be part of the University of Louisville and the School of Nursing. Those experiences have a ripple effect that strengthens our entire community.
UofL: What is one unique thing you’ve learned while working at the School of Nursing that you believe will stick with you throughout your career?
L.K.: Meaningful progress happens when servant leadership and collaboration go hand in hand. At the School of Nursing, I've seen leaders empower others, value different perspectives, and work together toward a shared purpose. That experience has shaped how I approach leadership, teamwork, and creating positive change.
UofL: Outside of your professional responsibilities, what are some hobbies or interests that help you unwind and stay balanced?
L.K.: Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, reading, staying active, and crafting. I especially value time with my family, watching my kids in their sports and experiencing life through their eyes. These are the things that help me step away and recharge.
