For Demetria Smith, nursing has always been personal.

Growing up, she spent a lot of time in emergency rooms and doctors’ offices because of severe allergies. What could have been overwhelming instead became something familiar and meaningful.

“The ER staff knew me and my mom on a first-name basis,” she said. “They always treated us with kindness and made a stressful situation easier. I thought they were so cool, and I knew I wanted to be like them someday.”

That experience stayed with her and eventually led her to the University of Louisville School of Nursing, where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in May 2026.

She chose the FNP path with a clear goal in mind.

“I want to be able to have more autonomy when serving people in the community,” she said.

Support that goes beyond the classroom

Like many graduate nursing students, Demetria quickly realized the program would challenge her, but what stood out just as much was the level of support behind it.

“The most surprising thing about my education journey has been how determined the faculty has been in ensuring my success,” she said. “They walked with me every step of the way and went above and beyond to make sure I understood the material and had all the resources I needed to become a successful nurse practitioner.”

She experienced that firsthand in her coursework, where faculty consistently took the time to make sure she felt confident in not just understanding the material, but in applying it.

Throughout the program, Demetria found guidance in faculty who took the time to invest in her growth.

Dr. Corniel has been my biggest influence and mentor,” she said. “She is so patient and kind. She was my family practice clinical instructor and was always so patient when explaining things to me and really encouraging as well.”

Confidence grows

One of Demetria’s most meaningful moments came during her pediatric clinical rotation.

She was part of a care team working with a patient experiencing complex neurological symptoms without a clear diagnosis. Drawing from her previous experience at Frazier Rehab, she suggested the possibility of functional neurological disorder (FND), something her preceptor hadn’t encountered before.

Instead of being dismissed, her perspective was considered.

After further review, the care team agreed and referred the patient for appropriate follow-up care.

“It was challenging because it’s such a rare condition and easy to miss,” she said. “But it was motivating to have my idea taken seriously. And it was fulfilling to see that family finally get the care they needed.”

Three words that say it all

When asked to describe her experience at the School of Nursing, Demetria sums it up in three words:

Challenging. Motivating. Fulfilling.

  • Challenging — “The coursework is challenging and mentally stimulating.”
  • Motivating — “The faculty believes in your ability to learn and retain information.”
  • Fulfilling — “Grasping material I struggled to learn and seeing it in clinical practice was such a fulfilling feeling.”

Outside of her coursework and clinicals, Demetria stays connected to her community.

She enjoys volunteering with youth at her local church and spending time with friends and family, something she’s made a priority even during the busiest parts of the program.

Now, as an MSN-prepared Family Nurse Practitioner, Demetria carries both her clinical training and personal experiences into her work.

Her journey, from being a patient inspired by compassionate care to becoming a provider herself, reflects what nursing education is really about: growth, confidence, and the ability to make a difference in the lives of others.

“I would highly recommend anyone seeking a nursing degree to do so at the University of Louisville,” she said. “You are guaranteed a quality education from faculty who really care about you and your learning needs.”
