UofL Nurse Anesthesia Celebrates Its First Graduates

Just a few years ago, the University of Louisville School of Nursing set out to build something new. This summer, that vision reached a major milestone.

The School of Nursing celebrated the graduation of the first cohort from its Nurse Anesthesia program, marking a defining moment for one of UofL Nursing’s advanced practice pathways and for the students, faculty and clinical partners who helped shape it from the beginning

Sixteen graduates completed the program as its inaugural cohort, becoming the first class to carry the UofL Nurse Anesthesia experience into professional practice. For faculty and students alike, the moment represented more than a commencement ceremony. It signaled the beginning of a new chapter for the program and for the communities these graduates are preparing to serve.

“Graduating our inaugural class is an extraordinary milestone, but it is also just the beginning,” said Cheryl Parker, Director of Nurse Anesthesia. “These 16 graduates took a chance on a new program and, in doing so, helped us build its foundation, shape its culture and establish the standard for those who will follow. They leave UofL not only as exceptionally prepared nurse anesthetists, but as part of the history of this program. As we welcome the next generation of nurse anesthesia residents, we do so with tremendous pride in how far we have come and great confidence in where we are going.”

Building a Program, Building a Profession

Nurse anesthesia education is one of the most rigorous and specialized pathways in advanced nursing practice. Students must build the clinical judgment, technical skill and steady presence required to care for patients during some of the most critical moments of their lives.

At UofL, the Nurse Anesthesia program prepares students through intensive coursework, hands-on learning and clinical experience designed to support safe, evidence-based anesthesia practice. The inaugural cohort’s graduation reflects the growth of a program that has moved from launch to legacy-building.

As the first class graduates, the program is already welcoming its fourth cohort. That overlap created a meaningful moment this year: one group completing the journey as another begins.

A Legacy Takes Shape

One of the most symbolic moments of the week took place during orientation for the newest nurse anesthesia students. Thirty incoming students became the fourth cohort of UofL’s Nurse Anesthesia program. During orientation, members of the graduating cohort passed along Watchful Care, a book honoring the history of nurse anesthetists in America.

The gesture connected students at the beginning of their journey with those who had just completed it. It also introduced a tradition rooted in excellence, mentorship and the responsibility of caring for patients at their most vulnerable moments. In many ways, it was a passing of the torch.

What began with a first cohort willing to help shape a new program is now becoming a tradition future classes can carry forward.

Impact Beyond the Classroom

The inaugural class also reflects the program's growing role in preparing the anesthesia workforce. All 16 graduates have secured employment, demonstrating both the demand for skilled anesthesia providers and the importance of preparing advanced practice nurses close to the communities they will serve.

The cohort's achievements are equally notable for their consistency and perseverance. Every student who entered the program as a member of the inaugural cohort successfully completed it, resulting in a 100% completion rate. During that same period, the program maintained its entire faculty team with zero faculty turnover, providing students with continuity, mentorship and stability as the program established its foundation.

Together, these milestones reflect the strength of a program that has grown rapidly while remaining focused on student success, academic excellence and the preparation of future nurse anesthetists.

As these first graduates begin professional practice and cohort four begins orientation, UofL Nurse Anesthesia stands at an important point in its history. The first chapter has been written. The next one is already underway.
