UofL School of Nursing staff, Ja'Vaughn Langford
At the School of Nursing, we are all about nurses, but it takes a village behind the scenes to provide a seamless education experience. One such look behind the curtain and you'll meet Ja'Vaughn Langford, a staff member of the finance team. Langford's ability to be detail-oriented and wildly creative (outside finance) makes her a unique and valuable addition to the Nursing team. When entering Langford's office with the intent to follow purchasing processes, you'll have to pass through her immaculately decorated door adorned with a hand-painted castle scene, mod-podge stone moon, and glittering crystals - an art project she proudly worked on with her daughter.
In this Q&A, Langford reveals more about her unique balance of Excel spreadsheets, artistic expression, and her passion for student wellness.
UofL What is your role at the UofL School of Nursing?
J.L. My role at the School of Nursing is Department Coordinator of the Finance Department. I monitor the use of the school’s ProCard, verifying each purchase, ensuring proper reconciliation, and adhering to the university’s policies. Another role I have recently stepped into is being a Cardinal Crew member. This role is especially meaningful to me, as the committee focuses on events and activities that raise awareness of mental health and wellness among our students.
UofL If you could describe your experience working at the School of Nursing in three words, what would they be and why?
J.L. Three words I would use to describe my experience are refreshing, adventurous, and exciting! It’s refreshing to work with leadership that understands the importance of work-life balance. It’s been adventurous because I work with a diverse collective of people from all walks of life. I enjoy the adventure of learning more about their accomplishments and interests. My excitement comes from not knowing what fun activity will come next. So far, I’ve enjoyed the School of Nursing retreat, holiday party, tickets to the men's and women's basketball games, instructor-led watercoloring, candy grams, lunch, and my favorite, using the Wellness Room. All exciting to me!
UofL Pick one aspect of your role that you believe impacts the UofL community the most. What is it and why?
J.L. One aspect of my role that impacts the UofL community is maintaining financial integrity. I take pride in ensuring funds are allocated correctly and policy compliance is upheld. In doing so, our UofL community remains connected to available resources and necessary funding to be successful. This impacts the opportunities for staff travel, faculty conferences, and students' networking events.
UofL What is one unique thing you have learned while working at the School of Nursing that you believe will stick with you throughout your career?
J.L. One unique thing I have learned while working at the School of Nursing is that learning and growth don’t look the same for every person. My learning and growth here is unique in what matters to me. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to crunching numbers, so I enjoyed learning utilize new financial systems. Through this, I’m able to apply my knowledge in everyday work functions, and share this information with my colleagues in other departments.
UofL Outside of your professional responsibilities, what are some hobbies or interests that help you unwind and stay balanced?
J.L. Outside of my professional responsibilities, I have many hobbies to help me unwind. I enjoy cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, rooting for my home team, the Louisville Cardinals, acrylic painting, anything to do outdoors (finding a new hiking trail, picnics in the parks, camping, etc.) and traveling. I also love gathering with family and friends, dancing, and completing DIY projects with my teen daughter.
